About the Author

Samuel Martinis the author of numerous booksand papers on the Japanese and Korean languages, including the definitiveAReference Grammar of JapaneseandA Reference Grammar ofKorean. He received his undergraduate and Master’s degrees in OrientalLanguages from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. inlinguistics from Yale University. At Yale, he served as chairman of theDepartment of East and South Asian Languages and Literatures, and theDepartment of Linguistics.

Sayaka Khanis a professional translator and interpreter based inTokyo, Japan. She has translated many books and technical documents fromEnglish to Japanese and vice versa. She is a graduate of Waseda University.

Fred Perryhas a BA from Yale University as well as an MBA fromSophia University, Tokyo. He arrived in Japan in 1956 and continues to livethere, where he has worked as a market researcher and consultant.
